Phuket and Krabi are both stunning, both on the Andaman, and only a 3-hour ferry apart — but they offer very different vacations. One is a fully developed island with everything from luxury resorts to nightclubs to international hospitals. The other is a low-rise coastal town with quieter beaches and a slower energy. The right pick depends on what you want from your beach week.

Geography: What You Actually Get
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, roughly 540 km² connected to the mainland by bridge. It has 30+ beaches, an international airport, multiple distinct neighborhoods (Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Bangtao, Phuket Town), and a year-round tourist economy. Driving end-to-end takes about 90 minutes.
Krabi is a mainland province on the coast across the bay from Phuket. The main tourist hubs are Ao Nang (the central beach town), Railay (a peninsula reachable only by long-tail boat), and Krabi Town (the inland provincial capital, less touristy). The famous photo-op islands — Hong, Phi Phi, Lanta, James Bond — are all day-trip distance.

Beaches
Phuket beaches
- Patong — busy, party-focused, lots of bars and street vendors. Skip if you want calm.
- Karon — long, wide, less crowded than Patong. Good for families.
- Kata / Kata Noi — surf-friendly in low season, calmer vibe.
- Kamala — quieter, more local, cheaper hotels.
- Bangtao / Surin — luxury resorts, Laguna complex, beach clubs (Catch, Café del Mar).
- Freedom Beach — small, tucked away, requires a boat or hike.
Krabi beaches
- Ao Nang — the main strip, decent beach but better as a base for boat trips.
- Railay (East / West) — accessible only by long-tail boat. World-class rock climbing on the karsts.
- Tonsai — backpacker-vibe beach next to Railay. Bohemian climbing community.
- Phra Nang Cave Beach — arguably Thailand's most photogenic beach. Limestone cliffs, turquoise water.
- Koh Hong / Koh Phi Phi / Koh Lanta — day trips by long-tail or speedboat.
Verdict: Phuket has variety and accessibility. Krabi has more dramatic scenery (Phra Nang and Railay are unbeatable). For pure beach quality, Krabi narrowly wins.
Vibe
Phuket feels like a developed beach destination — international restaurants, English-language signs, big resorts, malls, hospitals, traffic, and Western tourist density. Patong is genuinely chaotic at night.
Krabi (Ao Nang) feels like a Thai coastal town that grew tourism organically. Lower-rise, fewer chains, slower energy, more pickup-truck songthaews than taxis. Railay feels closer to a tropical retreat.
Nightlife
Phuket wins easily. Bangla Road in Patong is a full-on entertainment district — bars, clubs, ladyboy shows, beer bars. Beach clubs in Bangtao (Catch, Carpe, Café del Mar) are world-class for sunset cocktails. Phuket Old Town has a quieter speakeasy scene.
Krabi has bars on Ao Nang strip, fire shows on Railay, and a chill backpacker scene in Tonsai. It's pleasant, not wild. If “party” matters, choose Phuket.
For Families
Both work well for families. Phuket has more rainy-day options (Phuket FantaSea show, Splash Jungle waterpark, Aquaria, malls) and Bumrungrad-tier private hospitals. Krabi has fewer indoor amenities but offers easier swimming beaches and more accessible boat day-trips kids love.
For first-time family beach trips, Phuket leans easier. For older kids who like adventure, Krabi's long-tail trips and climbing are unbeatable.
For Couples / Honeymoons
Krabi (specifically Railay) is one of Thailand's most romantic beaches. Phra Nang at sunset, the limestone cliffs, the long-tail boats — it photographs like a postcard.
Phuket counters with the luxury resort tier (Amanpuri, Trisara, Six Senses Yao Noi nearby, COMO Point Yamu). For high-end honeymooners, Phuket has more options.
Day Trips
| Destination | From Phuket | From Krabi |
|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi Islands | 2 hr ferry / 1 hr speedboat | 1.5 hr ferry / 45 min speedboat |
| James Bond Island (Phang Nga) | 1 hr | 2.5 hr |
| Hong Islands | 2 hr | 30 min |
| Koh Lanta | 2.5 hr ferry | 1.5 hr ferry |
| Khao Sok National Park | 3 hr drive | 2.5 hr drive |
| Similan Islands (Nov-Apr only) | 1.5 hr | 3+ hr |
Krabi has better access to Hong, Phi Phi, and Lanta. Phuket has better access to James Bond and Similan islands.
Getting There
Phuket (HKT) has direct international flights from most major Asian and European hubs. From Bangkok: 1.5 hr flight, multiple per hour, ฿1,000-2,500.
Krabi (KBV) has fewer international routes — mostly Asian gateways and seasonal European charters. From Bangkok: 1.5 hr flight, ฿900-2,200. Flying into Phuket and ferrying to Krabi is also common.
When to Visit
Both share the same Andaman season pattern: November-April is peak with calm seas, sun, and dry weather. May-October is green season with rough seas, frequent rain, and 30-50% lower hotel prices. Some boat operators close in July-September.

Our Recommendation
First Andaman trip, want easy logistics: Phuket. Direct flights, more amenities, and you can still day-trip to all the Krabi photo spots.
Want quieter, more scenic, slower: Krabi. Specifically split between Ao Nang (3-4 nights) and Railay (2-3 nights).
Have 7+ days: Do both. 3-4 nights Phuket → ferry across → 3-4 nights Krabi/Railay. The ferry itself is gorgeous.
